Look what I discovered in my local Asian store – peanut cake! However, although it’s called a peanut cake, it’s really not a cake. đ It’s actually a kind of Chinese candy (for the life of me, I can’t remember its Chinese name) that is extremely popular back in Sibu, a Foochow town where I grew up. I haven’t had this peanut cake candy for probably 20 years…until now. đ Imagine my surprise when I came across this childhood treat right here in the States. And don’t be fooled by its unassuming package – the candy itself packs an absolutely delicious peanut flavor both in the crisp outer layer as well as the melt-in-your-mouth inner layer. I love that it’s not too sweet either. OMG…this thing is so addictive!

The peanut candy you have there looks so fresh. The ones we have here (at least the ones I found) are rather dull looking. Oh yes, I loved those candies when I grew up. Not sure about Sibu, but this was a popular sweet gifts in Kuching during Engagements (Chinese couples). We used to get 2 pieces, one, the peanut brittle candy and this one. I’ve always loved this one as the brittled one tends to be to hard.. LOL! Those were the days…. Thanks for sharing
Yes, it was the same in Sibu – both the peanut brittle and this one, wrapped in red paper. I prefer this one as well over the peanut brittle, which I felt is too sweet and too hard for my teeth. đ
